Prototype information
The covered hopper car dates back to the early 1900s. Initially, these cars were constructed of wood, but were later replaced with steel cars, which allowed for better durability and load-bearing capacity.
A covered hopper is an enclosed, self-releasing railroad freight car with a fixed roof, sides and ends with openings for loading through the roof and lower openings for unloading. Covered hopper cars are designed to transport dry bulk loads, ranging from grain to products like sand and clay. The cover protects the loads from bad weather.
Today, the grain hopper car remains an essential part of rail transportation, with modern versions featuring improved technology and designs to make them more efficient.
