Early versions of the flatcar were built entirely of wood, with low sides or no sides at all. Over time, steel became the primary material used in the construction of flat cars, making them stronger and more durable. The low wagon was used to transport a wide range of materials, including heavy machinery, vehicles, lumber and steel pipes. Today, flat cars are still used in rail transportation.
